The Short Answer
The Gregorian year 2027 runs from 23 Rajab 1448 to 3 Sha'ban 1449 in the Umm al-Qura calendar. The Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1449, is Sunday 6 June 2027, and Ashura (10 Muharram) is Tuesday 15 June. Ramadan begins on Monday 8 February, Eid al-Fitr is Tuesday 9 March, the Day of Arafah Saturday 15 May and Eid al-Adha Sunday 16 May; the Mawlid (12 Rabi al-Awwal) is Saturday 14 August, and Isra and Mi'raj (27 Rajab) falls twice, on 5 January and 25 December. These are the dates of the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia, computed in advance; where a month is begun by a local sighting of the crescent or by another calendar, local announcements may shift each date by a day.
The Hijri Months of 2027
Thirteen Hijri months begin in 2027, from Sha'ban 1448 on 9 January to Sha'ban 1449 on 29 December, and a fourteenth, Rajab 1448, is already running on 1 January. A lunar month lasts 29 or 30 days, so twelve of them take 354 or 355 days, 10 or 11 fewer than a Gregorian year. When the first new month of the year starts within its first 11 days or so, as Sha'ban 1448 does on 9 January, a thirteenth month starts before 31 December.
| Hijri month | First day | Days |
|---|---|---|
| Rajab 1448 | Thursday 10 December 2026 | 30 |
| Sha'ban 1448 | Saturday 9 January 2027 | 30 |
| Ramadan 1448 | Monday 8 February 2027 | 29 |
| Shawwal 1448 | Tuesday 9 March 2027 | 30 |
| Dhu al-Qi'dah 1448 | Thursday 8 April 2027 | 29 |
| Dhu al-Hijjah 1448 | Friday 7 May 2027 | 30 |
| Muharram 1449 | Sunday 6 June 2027 | 29 |
| Safar 1449 | Monday 5 July 2027 | 29 |
| Rabi al-Awwal 1449 | Tuesday 3 August 2027 | 30 |
| Rabi al-Thani 1449 | Thursday 2 September 2027 | 29 |
| Jumada al-Ula 1449 | Friday 1 October 2027 | 30 |
| Jumada al-Akhira 1449 | Sunday 31 October 2027 | 29 |
| Rajab 1449 | Monday 29 November 2027 | 30 |
| Sha'ban 1449 | Wednesday 29 December 2027 | 30 |
Of the 365 days of 2027, the first 156 (to 5 June) belong to the year 1448 and the other 209 to 1449. The year 1448 has 355 days in the Umm al-Qura calendar, and 1449 has 354.

The Holidays and Observances of 2027
| Day | Hijri date | Date in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Isra and Mi'raj | 27 Rajab 1448 | Tuesday 5 January (the night begins on the evening of 4 January) |
| Mid-Sha'ban | 15 Sha'ban 1448 | Saturday 23 January (the night begins on the evening of 22 January) |
| First day of Ramadan | 1 Ramadan 1448 | Monday 8 February |
| The 27th night of Ramadan | 27 Ramadan 1448 | Saturday 6 March (the night begins on the evening of 5 March) |
| Eid al-Fitr | 1 Shawwal 1448 | Tuesday 9 March |
| Day of Arafah | 9 Dhu al-Hijjah 1448 | Saturday 15 May |
| Eid al-Adha | 10 Dhu al-Hijjah 1448 | Sunday 16 May |
| Islamic New Year | 1 Muharram 1449 | Sunday 6 June |
| Ashura | 10 Muharram 1449 | Tuesday 15 June |
| Mawlid | 12 Rabi al-Awwal 1449 | Saturday 14 August |
| Isra and Mi'raj | 27 Rajab 1449 | Saturday 25 December (the night begins on the evening of 24 December) |
The Islamic day begins at sunset. A night named after a Hijri date, such as the night of 27 Rajab, is the night before that date's daylight hours, so it begins on the evening of the Gregorian day before.
Ramadan and the Two Eids
Ramadan 1448 begins on Monday 8 February 2027 and, in the Umm al-Qura calendar, lasts 29 days, so Eid al-Fitr is Tuesday 9 March; where a visible crescent is needed, Ramadan is expected to last 30 days and Eid to be Wednesday 10 March. Eid al-Adha is Sunday 16 May. The forecasts, the crescent on each evening and the reasons countries differ are in when does Ramadan 2027 start and Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha 2027.
The Islamic New Year 1449
1 Muharram 1449 is Sunday 6 June 2027. The Hijri year is counted from the Hijra, the emigration of the Prophet from Mecca to Medina, and its first month is Muharram. The new year is a public holiday in several countries, and it is marked quietly in most, without the celebrations of the two Eids.
Ashura
10 Muharram 1449 is Tuesday 15 June 2027, and 9 Muharram (Tasu'a) is Monday 14 June. Many Sunni Muslims fast on Ashura, often with the day before or after it. For Shia Muslims it is the anniversary of the death of Husayn ibn Ali at Karbala in the year 61 AH, kept as a day of mourning.
The Day of Arafah
9 Dhu al-Hijjah 1448 is Saturday 15 May 2027, the day the pilgrims of the Hajj stand at Arafah, and a day on which many Muslims who are not on the pilgrimage fast. The three days after Eid al-Adha, 11 to 13 Dhu al-Hijjah (Monday 17 to Wednesday 19 May), are the days of Tashriq. Because the Hajj follows the Saudi calendar, more countries keep the Saudi dates for Arafah and Eid al-Adha than for Ramadan; see Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha 2027.
Laylat al-Qadr
Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, is not fixed to one date. It is sought in the last ten nights of Ramadan, and especially in the odd ones. Ramadan 1448 has 29 days in the Umm al-Qura calendar, so its odd nights in 2027 are:
| Night | Begins at sunset on | Hijri date | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21st | Saturday 27 February | 21 Ramadan | Sunday 28 February |
| 23rd | Monday 1 March | 23 Ramadan | Tuesday 2 March |
| 25th | Wednesday 3 March | 25 Ramadan | Thursday 4 March |
| 27th | Friday 5 March | 27 Ramadan | Saturday 6 March |
| 29th | Sunday 7 March | 29 Ramadan | Monday 8 March |
The 27th night is a common choice, and in many places it is the night of the largest gatherings in the mosques; in 2027 it is the night of Friday 5 March, the evening before 27 Ramadan. Where Ramadan begins a day later, every night in the table moves a day later too.
Isra and Mi'raj
The night journey of the Prophet from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascension (al-Isra wal-Mi'raj) is commonly observed on 27 Rajab, although the sources do not agree on its date. 2027 has two: 27 Rajab 1448 is Tuesday 5 January and 27 Rajab 1449 is Saturday 25 December, with the nights beginning on the evenings of 4 January and 24 December. Two Rajabs fit in one Gregorian year because 27 Rajab 1448 falls in the first week of January.
Mid-Sha'ban
The night of 15 Sha'ban (Laylat al-Bara'ah, or Shab-e-Barat in South Asia) begins on the evening of Friday 22 January 2027, before 15 Sha'ban 1448 on Saturday 23 January. Some Muslims mark it with prayer and fasting, and others do not regard it as a special night.
The Mawlid
12 Rabi al-Awwal 1449 is Saturday 14 August 2027, the date on which the birth of the Prophet is commonly marked. Observance differs among Muslims: in many countries it is a public holiday with gatherings and recitations, while other Muslims do not mark it. Many Shia Muslims place the birth on 17 Rabi al-Awwal, which is Thursday 19 August 2027.
The White Days of 2027
The white days (al-ayyam al-bid) are the 13th, 14th and 15th of each Hijri month, when the Moon is near full; many Muslims fast on them. In 2027 they are:
| Hijri month | White days (13 to 15) |
|---|---|
| Sha'ban 1448 | 21 to 23 January |
| Ramadan 1448 | 20 to 22 February |
| Shawwal 1448 | 21 to 23 March |
| Dhu al-Qi'dah 1448 | 20 to 22 April |
| Dhu al-Hijjah 1448 | 19 to 21 May |
| Muharram 1449 | 18 to 20 June |
| Safar 1449 | 17 to 19 July |
| Rabi al-Awwal 1449 | 15 to 17 August |
| Rabi al-Thani 1449 | 14 to 16 September |
| Jumada al-Ula 1449 | 13 to 15 October |
| Jumada al-Akhira 1449 | 12 to 14 November |
| Rajab 1449 | 11 to 13 December |
Two of them overlap other days. The white days of Ramadan are already days of the fast. 13 Dhu al-Hijjah (19 May) is the last of the days of Tashriq, on which fasting is generally not done, so those who fast the white days of that month often shift them. The white days of Rajab 1448 (22 to 24 December 2026) and Sha'ban 1449 (in January 2028) fall outside 2027.
Why a Date Can Move by a Day
The Umm al-Qura calendar is a calculation. A month begins on the day after the evening on which, at Mecca, the new moon (conjunction) comes before sunset and the Moon sets after the Sun. That rule can be met on an evening when no crescent can be seen from any inhabited land, as on 8 March 2027, so a country that waits for a sighted crescent often starts the month a day later. Other countries use their own calculation, or follow the announcement from Saudi Arabia, which for some months can differ from the printed calendar. The Umm al-Qura explainer gives the rule, and the three kinds of Hijri calendar shows how far apart they can be. The calendar page shows any date of 2027 in all three.
Two Eclipses on the 29th
Both solar eclipses of 2027 fall on the 29th of a Hijri month, as every solar eclipse must fall at the end of a lunar month (why solar eclipses fall on the 29th). The annular eclipse of Saturday 6 February is on 29 Sha'ban 1448, the eve of Ramadan; see the annular eclipse of 6 February 2027. The total eclipse of Monday 2 August, whose path crosses Mecca, is on 29 Safar 1449; see the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 in Mecca.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Hijri year is 2027?
Both 1448 and 1449. 2027 begins on 23 Rajab 1448, and the year 1449 begins on Sunday 6 June 2027, so the second half of the year, from 6 June to 31 December (3 Sha'ban 1449), is in 1449.
When is the Islamic New Year in 2027?
1 Muharram 1449 is Sunday 6 June 2027 in the Umm al-Qura calendar. Local announcements may shift it by a day.
When is Ashura 2027?
10 Muharram 1449 is Tuesday 15 June 2027 in the Umm al-Qura calendar, with Tasu'a, the 9th, on Monday 14 June.
When is Laylat al-Qadr 2027?
It is sought in the odd nights of the last ten of Ramadan 1448: the nights beginning at sunset on 27 February and on 1, 3, 5 and 7 March 2027 in the Umm al-Qura calendar. The 27th night, often taken as the most likely, begins on the evening of Friday 5 March.
When is the Mawlid in 2027?
12 Rabi al-Awwal 1449 is Saturday 14 August 2027. Not all Muslims mark it, and many Shia Muslims mark 17 Rabi al-Awwal, Thursday 19 August.
Why are there two Isra and Mi'raj dates in 2027?
Because a Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian one, and 27 Rajab 1448 falls early in January (5 January). The next 27 Rajab comes 354 days later, on 25 December, still within 2027.
Are these dates official?
They are the dates of the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official civil calendar of Saudi Arabia, which is published in advance. They are not announcements for any other country. Local announcements, made on the evening of the 29th of the month before, may shift each date by a day.
